Chair's Message

Welcome to the 9th International Workshop on Antenna Technology (iWAT 2013), which will be held in Karlsruhe on 4-6 March 2013.

Due to the essentiality of antennas for all equipment that uses radio, the antenna technology is one of the major field of research in the RF area. Antennas are used in many devices of everyday use and in different application areas, e.g. medically, industrially and military. The iWAT 2013 is a premier forum for the exchange of information on state-of-the-art technologies in antenna design and advanced materials for antennas. It is organized by the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and technically co-sponsored by the IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society (IEEE AP-S).

The Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) is the largest research and education institution in Germany, resulting from a merger of the university (Universität Karlsruhe (TH)) and the research center (Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe) of the city of Karlsruhe. The university, also known as Fridericiana, was founded in 1825. In 2009, it merged with the former national nuclear research center founded in 1956 as the Kernforschungszentrum Karlsruhe (KfK). One of nine German Excellence Universities, the KIT is one of the leading universities in science and engineering in Europe, ranking 6th overall in terms of citation impact.

The university of Karlsruhe is a important historical place for antenna technology. It was in 1887 when Heinrich Hertz proved the existence of the electromagnetic wave in a lecture hall of the university. His experiments followed Michelson's 1881 experiment (precursor to the 1887 Michelson-Morley experiment) which did not detect the existence of aether drift, Hertz altered the Maxwell's equations to take this view into account for electromagnetism. Aside from joining the workshop, please also enjoy the nice city of Karlsruhe. Karlsruhe is a beautiful, modern city in the sunny southwest of Germany, famed for its fan-shaped historic street plan, has to offer many historical sights and cultural activities. This metropolis, nestling in the countryside of Baden, marks a meeting point for the sunny side of life, like the exceptional plan of the city symbolizes!

I am sure your presence and contributions to this workshop will make it a valuable and exciting event. As in the years before we expect you to benefit from the high quality keynotes, papers, posters, and panels followed by fruitful discussions with colleagues.

The Organizing Committee looks forward to meeting you and making your visit a memorable and delightful one.

See you in Karlsruhe in March 2013!

Sincerely,
Thomas Zwick
