Description

Modern day RF systems are build using integrated circuits in so called Micorwave Monolithical Integrated Circuits. This is necessary to gather the integtration density to allow devices like smartwatches or smartphones to have several RF modems for LTE, 5G, Bluetooth, NFC and other various communication standards. In this lab we will dive into desgining MMICs for a 5G base station in the n257 band, which operates from 26.5 GHz to 29.5 GHz.

Starting easy the software Cadence Virtuoso is introduced and several RF design tasks done. After three weeks you will be assigned into groups and start in parallel to the lab with your design project. You will design a complete receiver or transmitter in a group of 3 people. The cricuit has to inlcude the full simulation and a tape-out ready layout and has to be documented in aprox. 10 page document.

Your grade consits 50% from the group work and 50% from the report.

The course constists of guided work as well as you preparing the excercises and group work at home.

It is recommended to have done the courses RFE, RFIC and MRSE prior to this.

The best designs can be manufactured and measured in the next semesters Team Project: Sensors and Electronics.

The course will be held Mondays from 14:00 - 18:00 via zoom. You will access the software and design kits by connecting to our server. This necessitates either a VPN connection or being in the university network as well as a Windows, Linux or Mac computer.
