Antenna Synthesis for Cognitive MIMO-UWB Communication System

Sprache/ Language: English/ Deutsch

Voraussetzungen/ Requisites: Knowledge on antennas & propagation, MATLAB, CST

Beschreibung/ Description:

MIMO systems exploit channel spatial characteristics to maximize the amount of information transmitted between two points. This is done through the beamforming properties of antenna arrays and the parallel transmission of information through independent channels (multiplexing). The concept of antenna synthesis to produce orthogonal (non-interfering channels) has been done for narrowband systems. Cognitive systems sense the channel by sending out a the cognitive pilot channel (CPC) signal and utilize the spectrum when no primary systems are using it.

In this work, the challenge is to extend the synthesis method to wideband systems to allow higher data rates in the UWB band within the indoor environment. Added to that, the influence of one antenna among the array handling the CPC must be investigated. The student will be exposed to the concept of the Ray-tracing propagation model, channel characteristics, diversity, antenna synthesis method, device fabrication and system measurement skills.

Work to be done:

  1. To investigate the antennas suitable for UWB cognitive radio use
  2.

  3. To investigate the need for an extra antenna to handle the CPC signal
  4.

  5. To familiarize oneself with the ray-tracing simulation tools, which model the radio channel independently from the antennas
  6.

  7. To develop a strategy with the chosen antennas to apply the antenna synthesis algorithm to produce orthogonal channels. In this step, the channel information must already be available from the ray-tracing process.
  8.

  9. To develop and build the antennas and make the measurements for comparison with the simulated results.
