Prof. Marwan Younis has been named an IEEE Fellow. He is being recognized for his contributions to digital beam-forming techniques for spaceborne radar systems. The IEEE Grade of Fellow is conferred by the IEEE Board of Directors upon a person with an outstanding record of accomplishments in any of the IEEE fields of interest. The total number selected in any one year cannot exceed one-tenth of one- percent of the total voting membership. IEEE Fellow is the highest grade of membership and is recognized by the technical community as a prestigious honor and an important career achievement.


The distinctive contribution of Marwan Younis is in the advancement of spaceborne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) through the use of digital beam-forming, as is manifested in that next generation spaceborne SAR sensors such as NISAR (NASA/JPL and ISRO), Tandem-L (DLR), Sentinel-1 next generation (ESA), HRWS (Germany), and ALOS-4 (Japan) will utilize these techniques. The contributions of Dr. Younis have been scientific (algorithms, techniques, modes), conceptual (instrument and antenna design and conception), and engineering (instrument performance evaluation, trade space) as well as promoting these advancements through publications, organized conference sessions, and courses to industry, institutions and academia.


As a group leader for the SAR-Techniques group at the Microwaves and Radar Institute of the German Aerospace Center and as a remote sensing expert on Digital Beam-Forming (DBF) radar Prof. Younis has a long experience in spaceborne Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) Systems. His research interests cover the area of multi-channel receive/transmit radars (MIMO radar), their efficient usage through DBF techniques and the associated signal processing as well as calibration. His strength lies in the overall system competence, ranging from the hardware to the underlying physics and including the information-theoretical understanding of the signal processing.


Further, the acquisition of funding sources, project management and the task coordination are one of his responsibilities. He has experience in managing and execution of several industry and space agency projects. The technical emphasis is in the conception, development and performance computation of novel SAR instruments for Earth Remote Sensing. Through his work Prof. Younis has contributed to several innovative SAR missions and mission proposals such as Tandem-L (digital feed reflector based SAR), HRWS (High Resolution Wide Swath multi-channel DBF), TanDEM-X (unique German interferometric mission), VERITAS (interferometric mission to Venus by NASA/JPL) and SAOCOM-CS (bistatic companion satellite).
